REJESTR SPRAW OPERACYJNYCH I DOKUMENTACJI OPERACYJNEJ DEPARTAMENTU I MSW | REGISTER OF OPERATIVE CASES AND OPERATIVE DOCUMENTATION OF DEPARTMENT I OF THE MINISTRY OF THE INTERNAL AFFAIRS

Rejestr spraw operacyjnych i dokumentacji operacyjnej Departamentu I MSW (Register of operative cases and operative documentation of Department I of the Ministry of the Internal Affairs) a registration log of Department I of the Ministry of the Internal Affairs (see: dziennik rejestracyjny). The register recorded operative cases, collaborators and other documentation, including service dossier volumes, thematic case-files, ‘resident’ (i.e. operative officers abroad, see rezydent) dossiers, correspondence binders etc.

REZYDENT | 'RESIDENT'

Rezydent (‘Resident’) 1. a ‘resident’ of Department I of the Ministry of the Internal Affairs – a clandestine operative officer of the foreign intelligence (Department I of the Ministry of the Internal Affairs) officially employed by a diplomatic or commercial representation office of the Polish People's Republic (PRL) (so-called ‘post residency’) or "illegally employed", i.e. without diplomatic or consular status and without formal relations with any diplomatic representation of the PRL (so-called ‘illegal residency’), actually directing the work of other operative officers of the Ministry of the Internal Affairs in the post, i.e. the head of the ‘residency’ (‘rezydentura’); see teczka rezydentury, punktu/ogniwa operacyjnego Departamentu I MSW (‘residency’ dossier, operative point/cells of Department I of the Ministry of the Internal Affairs). 2. rezydent (łącznik) ‘resident’ (liaison) – a category of cooperation with the Security Office (UB), functioning in the instructions on operative work of 1945, 1953 and 1955, in the instruction on operative work of 1960 listed as a subcategory of secret collaborator, abandoned after 1970, but functioning in the operative practice of the SB; an agent could become a ‘resident’ and was usually entrusted with handling several informants; exceptionally, meetings with agents were allowed. The most trusted collaborators of the UB/SB were selected as ‘residents’, preferably former UB/SB officers, discharged from service at their request or for health reasons, causing no disciplinary concerns. ‘Residents’ relayed handling officers' instructions to UB/SB informants, handed them their remuneration and collected denunciations. "Residencies" were set up to make the work of the UB/SB officers more secretive. ‘Resident’ files were ran according to the rules applicable to secret collaborator personal and service dossiers.
